The End of 2010. What a year!

It truly is hard to believe that 2010 is over already, as if it just began.

To say that 2010 was a good year for City Provisions would be an understatement.  When I tell friends that we are lucky to have all of the press that we have gotten, and to have come out of the gate with a bang – especially in a food-centric town like Chicago – they are quick to remind me that it is not luck, but hard work and dedication.

As I do on every Supper Club, I must credit my tremendous staff, not to mention my wife, Jennifer.  She is the unsung hero behind this operation as she is at home with our kids while I build the second home that is City Provisions.

If 2010 was the building of the foundation of our Delicatessen, we hope that 2011 will serve to build our brand and our following even stronger.

In our catering department, we saw more than twice the weddings in 2010 as we did in 2009.  We now look at 2011 to be the year we break out as not only the catering company focused on sustainability, but one of Chicago’s best caterers.

Having solidified relationships with West Loop Studios, Salvage One, Architectural Artifacts and more, we are now on the exclusive caterers list for venues such as The Field Museum, A New Leaf, and The University of Chicago.

I believe I can speak for all of us here at City Provisions when I say thank you to all of our guests, farmers, artisans and producers who we work with on a daily basis that have made 2010 a great year for us.  We look forward to exceeding what we did this year in 2011.

Thank you and have a safe and happy new year.

an early autumn honey harvest

This week I saw butternut squash on the Farmer’s list which is a sign that autumn is coming. So good bye to Summer. It seems like yesterday that I went out to put our bees in our bee hive, when in fact it has been months.

This past weekend I harvested the first of our honey as a group of 30 on our Farm Dinner looked on.

If you have never put on a bee suit and gone out into an Apiary, there is nothing quite like it. To describe the experience would be like explaining what it is like to hike the Grand Canyon by showing you pictures. It is absolutely, in a word, awesome. To have thousands of bees around you in what was an empty hive just months ago, only to turn around and harvest the honey is a true work of nature.

Scraping the honey off with a hot knife and having our guests taste the raw honey was a first that I will never forget and tell the story of thousands of times. To have a group of like minded people to share that experience with me made this Farm Dinner very near and dear to my heart and am grateful to have shared. I truly believe that my purpose in life is to do things like this for people, and this has been why I have done these Farm Dinner Experiences. Chalk it up to another great culinary experience outside of the kitchen.

Thank you to all who came and for those who didn’t get a chance, see the pictures by Christina Noel here: http://bit.ly/cjJVtV

no sleep till…

I know people say that sleep is overrated and that may be true. When passion overtakes adrenaline, I guess sleep is not so necessary.

The first day of our friends and family opening was exactly what it should have been. Scale issues, POS problems, pricing discrepancies, all of that. With all staff on board, we trudged through the issues and had a great time showing off what we at City Provisions have been building for what is coming up on a year.

The weeks of training, stocking shelves, and working in 100 degree heat without an A/C unit are behind us. Now it is time to focus on what really matters: driving our Mission and connecting our community with food.

where did summer go?

It is hard to believe the summer is almost finished. We have seen so many great things come our way. Much has been ado in our Community: We participated at the Green City Market BBQ and had a great time. Girl and the Goat finally opened while Lula had to close from flooding. I finally made it out to Vie for an incredible chef’s tasting menu. And have enjoyed crabs in Baltimore with my family. I remained fairly silent while a local chef blasted the local food movement, along with a local magazine, in an effort to draw attention to a push for a television show.

We at CP have been busy building, training, and being patient with the City in hopes of bringing our dream into reality that is the City Provisions Delicatessen.
